Do you remember the days before law school and what you dreamed your life would be? Before passing the Bar, did you have idealistic goals about helping others and being happy? Whatever happened to those goals? Are you living the life you dreamed? Or are you wondering what happened to that person so many years ago?
If you’re searching to reconnect with that person who once lived inside you, it may be time to rediscover yourself. Take some time to reflect on what seems to be missing in your life. When were, you living your happiest life and what’s missing now that you need to get back? Do you like the person you’ve become? If not, who do you want to be? What do you wish your life looked like?
Take a look back and closely examine the steps you took to get to where you are now and what may have contributed to this feeling of losing part of yourself. Has there been some life altering event that led you to this place? Or maybe it was just little things along the way like becoming disillusioned with your work and taking clients for the money and not the joy. Spend some time with a notebook and pen and write down all the things that led you to the path you’re now on and what you’d like to see change.
Then, begin to get back in touch with yourself by becoming more mindful and purposeful. Connect to who you are and who you want to be on a deeper level. Finding time to just “be” is the perfect way to do this.
Spending time with a horse is a great way to be in mindful meditation. It allows you to feel the calm, peaceful manner of the horse and allow that peacefulness to transfer to you. This sense of overwhelming peace is a great way to get in touch with the “real” you.
If a difficult relationship has been at the heart, or at least on the path, to where you are now, it may be time to move on from it. Or at least take some time away from it. Distancing yourself from negative relationships will allow you to get more in touch with your place of joy.
Reconnect with the person you miss by spending some time in solitude each day. To get back in touch with yourself, you have to stop avoiding dealing with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. Take some time to sit quietly each day and start to work through your thoughts. Forgiving yourself along the way if you need to.
Now that you feel like you’re back on the right path, it’s time to set new goals for yourself. Ones that are more in line with who you want to be and how you want to live. What does your new, purposeful life look like? What does it include? What needs to go?
Above all, be patient with yourself. You didn’t lose track of who you wanted to be overnight, it took time to get there and it will take time to find your way back. Continue to connect with yourself daily, remove negative energy from your life, and work towards the new goals you set for yourself. You can, and will, find your way back to being the person you wanted to be.
